What are Veneers?
Veneers are made of composite or porcelain materials that bond to the front of a tooth. They are primarily used to improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth that has a defect such as a chip, improper alignment or discoloration.
Veneers are thin sheaths of dental grade porcelain that are affixed to the front surfaces of teeth. Once in place, veneers can conceal or correct a number of smile flaws with just one, minimally abrasive cosmetic dentistry treatment.
Who Should Consider Veneers?
Veneers are an effective cosmetic dentistry solution for patients with many cosmetic flaws. However, no treatment is right for every patient. During a cosmetic dentistry consultation, Dr. Bruno will examine your smile, discuss your treatment goals, and help you find the right cosmetic dentistry option to meet your needs. Some of the many reasons patients choose porcelain veneers include:
- To conceal dental staining that can’t be removed with traditional teeth whitening methods
- To close gaps between teeth when the bite is otherwise fully functional
- To perfect a smile that has numerous chips, cracks, stains, and gaps in teeth
What Happens During Porcelain Veneer Treatment?
Porcelain veneers are placed in two dental appointments. At your first visit, we prepare the teeth by removing a small amount of surface tooth enamel. Then, we capture bite impressions that are used by the dental lab to create your porcelain veneers. To allow you to get used to the look and feel of your veneers and protect your teeth from damage, Dr. Bruno places temporary veneers. When we receive your final restoration from the lab, you’ll return to the office, so we can exchange the temporary for your flawless, custom-crafted porcelain veneers. The first appointment may take an hour or longer, but the second visit is usually significantly shorter.
How do I Care for My Veneers?
Once your porcelain veneer treatment is complete, you can go back to brushing and flossing your teeth as usual. With daily care and regular dental appointments with our team, your veneers will last five to ten years. To ensure the maximum lifespan of your veneers we may recommend you use a softer toothbrush or less abrasive toothpaste. You should also consider using a waxed floss to avoid tugging and pulling around the edges of your porcelain veneers. If you need help caring for your smile, we’ll be happy to demonstrate best practices when you visit us for your six month dental exam and teeth cleaning.
